Is The Law of Attraction Biblical?

Howdy,

Welcome to Take me to eternity where I look at what is coming into the church with a biblical lens. Sometimes we need to dissect tradition from our view of scripture. Social constructs from unalterable truth and throw out that which does not line up.

This is going to be a touchy subject for some. I really believe it needs to be looked at more carefully because when believed and lived out this idea not only hurts people but it also hurts our relationship with God. Today I will be talking about Decreeing and Declaring otherwise known as The Law Of Attraction or positive confession.

I know that some may say that there is a difference between decreeing and declaring, positive confession and the law of attraction but there really isn’t. It all runs on the same principle. Your words have power and can speak things into being. You declare a thing to be and it will be. There are verses used to say that it is taught in scripture but as we look at them we will talk about if it really teaches that. Some are more blatantly deceptive than others and the fact that you can hear so many teachers misusing scripture, twisting it and teaching this is not acceptable. When God’s word is taught it in no way should be perverted.

The law of attraction is a very new age/ new thought idea. Though many different religions teach it. It says that positive or negative thoughts bring positive or negative experiences into a person’s life. It is based on the idea that people and their thoughts are made from pure energy and that like energies attract each other. It says that one can improve their health, wealth and personal relationships with thoughts and words. The idea is that one must also feel that the desired changes have already occurred. Or as in christian circles they say faith is a force or power. An energy source and that we have to use faith to activate our manifestation of reality. Faith is not a force we cannot activate what we want if we have enough of it. Faith is trust in God and what he can do.

Self deluded ideas that the thing we want we have already gotten or has happened. Visualizations and positive affirmations, vision boards, and manifesting all have a part in this. Activating your destiny, claiming your blessing. It is effectively acting like reality isn’t reality.

Some say that the presence and power of god is in everything but when they say that they aren’t talking about the God of the universe, what they are saying is a more hindu/pantheistic way of saying god. He is a force or energy not a personal creator of the world. It results in the understanding that our words hold the power to force God to give us what we want. Which is absolutely wrong. So many who teach this also teach that anything wrong in our lives is due to lack of faith or punishment for sin. Which is refuted extensively in the entire book of Job.

The Law of attraction says that like attracts like and we hear countless pastors and teachers telling us we need to decree “that a thing is a belief that it has already been done.” Or speak things over family members so that it will be true. We are to declare that breakthrough and believe it has already come to pass. Believe in the manifestation and wait for it, knowing it will come. It sounds a little silly to say it but this is not just being taught, but widely accepted and believed. This is what some think Chrisitanity is. No wonder so many people fall away from what they think is Christianity.

Essentially this is the same lie that has been told from the beginning. You can be just like God. It brings the power of God down and puts it on the human. When we believe we have the power to create and manipulate our reality with thoughts, feelings and words we are saying I have the power of god inside myself to use as I please. But scripture says in Isaiah 14:24

“The Lord of hosts has sworn saying, “Surely, just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it will stand,”. Isaiah‬ ‭14:24‬

And in Isaiah 46:9-11

“Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’; Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man of My purpose from a far country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, surely I will do it.” Isaiah‬ ‭46:9-11‬

We are told time and time again that God is unique in his character and attributes. That he is completely sovereign or in control and that his purpose and will is what will prevail. Our job is not to decree, declare, or attract our own wants; it is to conform to the image of Christ. To be in step with his spirit and submit to his will. We are to glorify him in all that we do and that does not mean by getting that new car we wanted or having our bills paid with ease. 1 Timothy 6:8-11 says

“If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.” 1 Timothy‬ ‭6:8-11‬

We are to be content with what God gives us. We ask him and petition him for what we want but we know that it is his will that will prevail and that he knows what is best in every situation. Submission is really lacking when we start just telling him what we are going to get.

Some call it positive confession. Which sounds nice doesn’t it? We are to speak positively but not because we will make things exist because of it. We do it because we are to be content with what we have, thankful and filled with gratitude.

Got questions says that the prosperity gospel (which is who pushes this in hyper charismatic circles) misinterprets the promises of God. “confession” is agreeing with what God has said; “positive confession” is demanding human desires. People who push positive confession say that the practice is merely restating God’s promises as given in the bible, but they don’t differentiate between universal promises God made to his followers like in Phillipians 4:19 (and my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in christ Jesus) and personal promises made to individuals at a certain time for a particular purpose like in Jeremiah 29:11 (For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil. To give you a future and a hope). They also misinterpret the promises God does give us, refusing to accept that God’s plan for our lives may not match up with our own. Isaiah 55:9 (For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.)

As you see in Philippians 4:19 he will supply all our needs; not our wants and so often we think we need something but in reality God knows what we need.  We are told in scripture that we will have trials. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10) That families will be divided. (Matthew 10:34-36) that we can ask God for anything. That we are to delight ourselves in the Lord and we will get the desires of our hearts (Psalms 37:4)  but how often is our desire not in alignment with what we think will fulfill that desire? Or in alignment with God’s will and purpose for us and our lives? I know if I got all the things that I thought I desired, life would be very different and not in a good way. God gives us better than we could imagine and sometimes that is by saying no to us. Not giving us what we think we need.

So often today we hear so-called christian teachers and leaders talking about the power of your thoughts or the power of your words. We hear that there is power in God’s word and we should speak it out loud to activate it. Like an incantation.  We hear that if you are sick it is your own lack of faith because it is always God’s will to heal, therefore you must not have enough faith to be healed. Or maybe you spoke sickness over yourself? Maybe you have some hidden sin that you need to confess. That is, what you must do in order to get it. If in fact we are sick and we say that we are not, we are simply liars, it gets us nowhere. We cannot delude ourselves.

This has done much damage in the christian community where people have been devastated by family deaths and sickness and told that they didn’t give enough money to be healed or they just lacked faith.  What a demonic idea that is being pushed on the christian community. You are not doing enough or you would have all the things. For one, to say “I must” in order for God to do anything is raising humans up and pulling God down.

He does not need our help to create, heal or empower. He is the power source. He is the one who gets to call the shots and do the healing or creating. Our words don’t create. God creates. Our words don’t have power in that sense. They are simply words. Some people use proverbs 18:21 to say that our words can create and have power. It says

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs‬ ‭18:21‬

When you read chapter 18 however you can see what it means when it says this. Iit shows the power of our words with things like a brother being offended is harder to be won than a strong city and contentions are like the bars of a citadel. I. E. our words can offend and make it harder to get close to people. It talks about quarrels and understanding, the wisdom and folly that come from a man’s mouth. Judgments made. A fool’s lips bring strife and his mouth calls for blows. Our words are extremely powerful in the sense that we can hurt people or build them up with our words. This is so important to remember. We are told in James 3:7-10

“For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.” James‬ ‭3:7-10‬

Our tongue is powerful in the sense that our words can build up a person or tear them down but not create things.

I have heard it used that, because God creates with words and we are made in his image therefore we have the power to create with our words. However we aren’t God. We don’t have that power. We aren’t co creators. He is the creator and we are his creation. This is to look to ourselves as  a power source instead of God. we need to be intentional with where our focus is. I am not good enough, I can not do anything without God for he sustains my very being.

To declare  and decree is simply a positive confession. You say aloud what you want and expect that God will make it happen. It is not always God’s will to heal or noone would ever die. We live in a fallen world and sickness happens. Its not always his will for us to have money and things that is selfish and greedy. James 4:3 says

“You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.” James‬ ‭4:3‬

James 4:13-16 says

“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil.” James‬ ‭4:13-16‬

Luke 12:15 says

“Then He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.”” Luke‬ ‭12:15‬

And Revelation 3:17-18 says

“Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.” Revelation‬ ‭3:17-18‬

But, People like Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyers, Bill Johnson and Kenneth Copeland are all proponents of spreading this false idea. It is dangerous. The idea that if we speak aloud the

Right words with the right faith we can gain, goes against the entirety of scripture. So many speak of our words being powerful and we should only speak good things and not negative. The idea that “like attracts like” is one phrase used. Or everything has the power and presence of god.

Joyce Meyers in one video says. “God taught me by the Holy Spirit how to start confessing the word of God out loud. And calling things that were not yet a reality in my life as if they already existed.”

When someone says God taught me by the Holy Spirit and then changes the text to fit their own agenda, run. We cannot assume that we know and are able to make happen the things in our lives that is God’s will for us.our hearts are deceitful and we cannot trust our own desires.

After she says that she quotes part of Romans 4:17 she says “we worship a God who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist:  and then says “that’s how powerful your words are”

How do we go from God something which means so can I? We aren’t God and just because he lives in us does not make us equals.

The verse says

“(as it is written, “A father of many nations have I made you”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist.” Romans‬ ‭4:17‬

Part of the problem with using this text to say that we should declare and decree, name it and claim it or speak things into existence is that this is explicitly talking about God. HE gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist. It doesn’t say therefore you can give life to dead things and call into being that which does not exist, that is not our job.  Another problem is in context, it’s talking about calling the gentiles his people when they weren’t not yet his people. Calling the dead in sin, a peoples that weren’t thought to be able to have salvation “his” as if they already were saved. This is talking about the redemption of the gentiles not us saying things and them coming true. Though he is our life giver in more than one way and he does create out of nothing. We don’t have that ability either through speaking scripture out loud or decreeing it to be and declaring it is so. This is a description of God’s Character and why we should have faith in him.

She also says “words inherently have power.” “ When we speak the word of God over our lives, our children’s lives or over their futures.” “One of the things I started to say when my kids were all little was, “all of my children grow up and they marry born-again, spirit filled men and woman and they all serve God all their life.” and you know all of my children are married to somebody that loves God, their all in some way shape or form, serving God in ministry.”

I know there is a break in the thought but that is exactly what she said. She is implying that her words over her children are why they love God, and serve him.

At what point is there not a halt put on to say “wait we are talking about GOD” and his character, why we should have faith in him, how does one then attribute that to us? We are not God.

She goes on to talk about how you can speak life into your situations and how we can’t say anything we want but we can speak the word of God out loud and those words have power. There is a truth to this statement but not in the sense that she is pushing. The word of God when we say it out loud does not have a power in and of itself. We do not have power when we speak the words of God. We cannot simply speak what the Bible says and use it like a force.

Another person who is really well known who teaches this is Joel Osteen. It shouldn’t be a shocker, with his “the power of I AM” mumbo jumbo he uses every time he speaks. Or the “your words become reality” speeches he gives. His description goes like this.. “ I want to talk to you today about the power of I AM. What follows these two simple words will determine what kind of life you live. I am blessed, I am strong, I am healthy, or I am slow, I am unattractive, I am a terrible mother. The I am’s that are coming out of your mouth will bring either success or failure. All through the day the power of “I am” is at work. We make a mistake, I am so clumsy, we look in the mirror, I am so old, we see someone very talented, I am so apt. We get caught in traffic. I am so unlucky. Many times we use the power of I am against us, we don’t realize how it’s affecting our future. Here is the principal, “what follows the “I am” will always come looking for you.” he says when we say I am so old, wrinkles come looking for you. When you say I am so fat, calories come looking for you. This is someone claiming to be a christian pastor simply teaching new age ideas and coating it in a christian veneer.

It’s interesting to me that he uses I AM as someone professing to be a christian. At the same time tacking it onto a power source. Our words don’t create who we are and what our life consists of. They don’t change our circumstance simply by saying things like I am wealthy, I am healthy and I am whole.

There is a group called the I AM movement

Which is a precursor to the New age movement. It is an offshoot of theosophy (will explain more about that in a min.) the movement teaches that the “spark from the I am is in all of us” as spark from the divine flame, and that we can experience this presence, love, power and light and its the power of the violet consuming flame of divine love- through quiet contemplation and by repeating affirmations and decrees. By affirming something one desires will cause it to happen. They call themselves a christian movement yet clearly teach contrary to scripture. For Joel Osteen to use the I ams how he does is very intriguing knowing its link to the occult. What a perversion of truth.  I have heard some say that we need to go into the new age and take back the practices that belong to christians but that isn’t how it works. Why would they want to do anything that glorifies God? And why would we want to do anything that doesn’t? There is nothing to take back. We don’t mean the same things when we say I am or that words have power. Our vocabularies might have the same words but the definitions are worlds apart.

The first time that the law of attraction was mentioned (though the idea has been around way longer) was in 1877 by a woman named Helena Blavastsky . Helena Blavastky was a very well known occultist who called herself a Mystic. She started a religion called theosophy which pulls together philosophy, science and spiritual ideas. Her Ideas helped form the new age movement as we know it.  She was anti-christian. She started a magazine that became widely known as the theosophical magazine after creating the theosophical society. But when she started it it was called Lucifer. She was in fact a luciferian better known as a satanist. Her teachings make up a large amount of  the New Age teachings but are also taught largely in the Satanic bible. There are many quotes of hers praising Satan calling him the true god. She has been called the “Mother of the New Age”.

Why would Christian leaders use ideas that come from such a satanic source? This is who was a huge influence on bringing about the Law of attraction. Yet we see it repackaged throughout the christian circle as word of faith, which unfortunately is taught far and wide by christians and unbelievers alike. Kenneth Hagan, a word of faith teacher wrote, “you can have whatever you say.. You always get in your life what you believe for and what you say. Some call it positive confession. The decree and declare movement. They claim that if someone decrees or declares something, then it will happen.

They claim that this is biblical because we are made in the image of God. they say since we are made in his image we can do what he does. God spoke things into existence so we can also. He healed and performed miracles so we can also. This group says that to pray and ask is faithless. To pray and say thy will be done to God is a faithless prayer that shouldn’t be prayed. Yet this is how God himself taught us to pray. Jesus while praying in the garden ASKED that the cup would pass by him. Then he prayed but not my will BUT YOURS be done. He modled for us to ask and to submit to whatever the answer is. We trust God knowing he CAN do anything but submitting to whatever HIS will is.

We to some degree are made in God’s image. His likeness but that does not mean we have all of his characteristics or attributes. Paul prayed asking if God would take the thorn from his side. And God answered. My grace is sufficient for you. In other words God answered and his answer was no. This shows again our model for prayer and it is not an incantation to force God’s hand. Nor is it an allowing of God to work. It is absolute trust and submission.

When we look at the old testament we can see that worship to God is partly intention of the heart and part action. I know so many who say that it is all about our intentions but that really isn’t true. When Lot’s wife disobeyed, she was killed. When Abihu and Nadab, the sons of Aaron the high priest offered “strange Fire” they were immediately killed. Uzzah, a Levite who was helping escort the ark of the covenant for king david when he tried to steady it as they were traveling, was killed. What was their intent? We don’t know but we can say that maybe there is more than just intent that matters. If we are to learn from these experiences and we can’t say their intent was nefarious then what we can presume is that there is structure to how God wants us to come to him. That he has shown us that structure and that we should try to stay within the confinements of it. People say don’t put God in a box but he gave us this coloring book of life. The instruction manual is right there and we should try to keep the color in its contained places.

Not that he expects perfection but that there is an order to worship and his order is shown in scripture and not outside sources. We should worship in spirit and truth.

This idea is what the new age teaches along with new thought, Word of faith, the prosperity preachers, christian science, and the NAR just to name a few. This is the name it and claim it, decree and declare it idea. Grab your healing. Speak it into existence.have enough faith and you can have whatever you want. You can manifest your own destiny. Your own reality. You just have to do the right things. What a burden to put on peoples backs.

Instead of relying on our own selves to decree and declare, to be good enough and do enough in order to get the things that we want, we should be resting in the peace of God. Trusting that he will do all the things, he will provide everything that needs to happen in our lives. We need to stop relying on our own understanding, stop relying on our own power and our own selves and remember that we are to be content and at peace with who God is; knowing that he is the one that has the power. He will do everything that needs to happen to sustain us. He is a good God. We can trust him.

When we decide that it’s up to us to choose what needs to happen and will it into being, we forget to look to the only one that can do all of the things that we need done. We forget to look to the one that can actually help us, the only one that can provide for us. We can’t do it apart from God. Why do people keep trying?

Our words do have power; we can destroy relationships, our own integrity, and others self esteem with our words. We can also strengthen relationships and show our own integrity. We can help lift others up with our words and we can tear them down emotionally. Words are powerful but not as an incantation. Not as a secret power hidden inside ourselves that we need to harness.

This is what prosperity preachers teach, a man centered, man powered gospel. One that says I AM and I can do. If I say that I am sick I am speaking sickness into my life. If I say that I am in poverty I am speaking poverty into my life. If I speak words of affirmation then that is what will follow. But It really isn’t up to us. This isn’t what the bible teaches.

If this is an attribute of God. The ability to speak things into existence. An attribute that he alone holds. Something that makes him unique then putting it on ourselves is making ourselves to be god. This is dangerous. Dangerous to those who believe that they have the power to control their circumstances. Dangerous to those who think they aren’t good enough because it isn’t working. Dangerous for those parents who think they didn’t try hard enough or do enough and that is why their child is sick or dies. It creates a space for people to be angry at God when God never promised them that they could control any of it in the first place. This is one of the reasons I am so adamant on everyone studying scripture. Everyone digging in and not just taking little bite sized pieces. Search it, know it, study so that you can be able to spot when someone is speaking wrongly of God.

We are told we are to put on the armor of God, that we are in a spiritual battle that we should be ready to fight. We are to be solid in truth, willing to stand up for it and knock down anything that comes against the knowledge of God. we are to put on Christ, to look like him and not the world. We are to know the gospel and stand on it. Be prepared to share it, shield ourselves with trust that God is good and that he knows what’s best. That he can do anything that needs to be done and that he is our protector. We need to know that we are saved and stand firm in it. Know who’s we are and that it isn’t based on us but on him. His goodness, his purity, his sacrifice. The only weapon we have is scripture. We need to yield it knowing how to use it. Knowing what it says and how to speak it. That takes time and effort.

Scripture tells us that we make plans but God establishes our paths.

God plans and God swears. Things happen as he intends. He plans and so it is accomplished.

God knows the beginning from the end. HIS PURPOSE will be established HE will accomplish all his good pleasure. HE brings it to pass. Not us. Romans 8:28 says

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans‬ ‭8:28‬

God is who causes. He is sovereign. We can make some choices in life but even those are limited to what he allows. We aren’t called to be healthy, and wealthy we are called according to his purpose to glorify him with all that we do. We really need to be less self focused and more God focused. Remember who’s we are. Rest in HIS power. Stop trying to act like we are the source. I am so glad that it isn’t on me. That I don’t have to do enough or be good enough or say exactly the right thing all the time. I get to rest in him John 16:24 says

“Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.” John‬ ‭16:24‬

We aren’t told to decree and declare we are told to ask knowing that God can do anything. Ask knowing God’s character and what his will is. Knowing that whatever his choice is, it is for our best even when it doesn’t feel like it. When we come to the Lord we should do so without selfish intentions. Without empty ambitions but with reason and faith. We should use our brains when we ask. Know him and seek what he says is good and pure and true. Proverbs 16:9 says

“The mind of man plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs‬ ‭16:9‬

I really think almost this entire chapter applies.

We can say all of the I ams all we want but the Lord directs what will happen. Our words don’t create our reality. If you say I am sick it doesn’t make you sick, you are simply stating reality. If you said I am well when you’re not you are just lying. Imagine if it did. The conflicting reality we would have. Who’s prayers get listened to when we pray conflicting prayers with other believers? We can’t all get what we want. We aren’t even told that we will get what we want. God says in psalms 37:4

“Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalms‬ ‭37:4‬

When we delight ourselves in the Lord we are delighting ourselves in the things he says to be good. We are aligned with him in such a way that our desires align with his will. When we are walking apart from him and not fully with him we aren’t in line with him. It’s so easy to get out of step with God. Look to the world more than him and though we are saved we start to look a bit more like the world, talk more like the world, and think more like the world. We need to be in our bibles seeking him with prayer and earnest prayer and requests. Seeking his counsel and direction so that we are in step with the Holy Spirit. Its so easy for our desires to not line up with what we think will fulfill them. Keep that in mind when thinking that our words can create. Philippians 4:4-9 says

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians‬ ‭4:4-9‬

We are to let God know our requests. We ask not demand.

I have heard Job 22:28 used to say that we are told to decree and declare a thing and it will be established for you. So let’s look at that. Job 22:23-30 says.

“If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; If you remove unrighteousness far from your tent, And place your gold in the dust, And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks, Then the Almighty will be your gold And choice silver to you. For then you will delight in the Almighty And lift up your face to God. You will pray to Him, and He will hear you; And you will pay your vows. You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; And light will shine on your ways. When you are cast down, you will speak with confidence, And the humble person He will save. He will deliver one who is not innocent, And he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”” Job‬ ‭22:23-30‬

When looking at the book of Job you have to keep in mind who is talking. Context is hugely important when we look at scripture. In this chapter Eliphaz is both accusing and encouraging Job. He is telling him what he needs to do to be right with God and essentially telling him that he will be saved and condemned by his own righteousness or lack there of. He is implying that Job had not known God and that if he gets right with God then prosperity will follow. Essentially it is the prosperity gospel circa 2200 BC. If we look at the fact that he was rebuked in later chapters; as well as we can see he isn’t speaking rightly of God or his character and on top of that he is misjudging the situation with Job as a whole. We can say this isn’t a passage to put any weight in. It was spoken from someone who should not be listened to. It was meant (if read in context) to show us something not to follow .

When we read scripture we need to do so with a heart to understand and not just look skin deep at verses. When people quote scripture, stop and look it up. Read chapters to see what the verses mean. Use your brain to meditate on what you know of that book, that situation. Do research because all too often we can take a verse and make it mean something it absolutely doesn’t mean.

There is a book called the secret that I think really plunged this idea into christian circles because it uses vocabulary that christians are comfortable with. In the book The Secret it uses interviews with new thought authors and speakers to explain the principles of the proposed metaphysical law that one can attract anything that one thinks about consistently and the flip side to that is if you have issues in your life such as sickness, poverty or the like it’s your fault. Yet you can manifest your own reality. Sounds like what I have been talking about right?

The book ”the secret” really brought this front and center.

This is a clip from Marcia Montenegro’s summation on CANA

The Abraham Teachings

Rhonda Byrne, author of The Secret, is a disciple of Jerry and Esther Hicks. The Hicks claim they learned this technique, which they call the Science of Deliberate Creation, from Abraham. Not Abraham as in the Bible patriarch, but Abraham as “a group of obviously evolved teachers” who “speak their broader Non-physical perspective through the physical body of Esther.”4 Basically, Esther Hicks is receiving or channeling these teachings from spirits.5

Here are the principles of the Abraham teachings from the Hicks website:

– You are a Physical Extension of that which is Non-physical.

-You are here in this body because you chose to be here.

-The basis of your life is Freedom; the purpose of your life is Joy.

-You are a creator; you create with your every thought.

-Anything that you can imagine is yours to be or do or have.

-You are choosing your creations as you are choosing your thoughts.

-The Universe adores you; for it knows your broadest intentions.

-Relax into your natural Well-being. All is well. (Really it is!)

-You are a creator of thoughtways on your unique path of joy.

-Actions to be taken and money to be exchanged are by-products of your focus on joy.

-You may appropriately depart your body without illness or pain.

-You cannot die; you are Everlasting Life.

The above points are all about you. There is no glorification of God, no exaltation of Christ, no accountability to God, but rather, man is made into a god, ruling over his own life through his own desires.

(The secret: A cosmic dream machine by Marcia Montenegro on Christian Answers For the New Age)

It is so sad watching as people take demonic teachings and repackage them as Christian. They use Christian language to muddy the waters and take our eyes off of God. One of the biggest dangers inside the Christian sphere is self worship. We look to ourselves instead of God. We take his attributes on ourselves and delude ourselves into thinking we have power.

It makes sense that when places like Bethel teach the idea that you can say what you want and you will get it. That you just have to believe for breakthroughs people like Jenn Johnson would say that The Holy Spirit is like the genie from Aladdin. To them that seems like the right explanation of him.

The more I know about the correlation between new age new thought and hyper charismatics/ NAR the more I understand why they say what they say.

Bethel starts off their service with a very declarative prosperity repeat after me session. You cannot rightly call it a prayer. I recorded this from one video from their site. Right before they take offerings Bill Johnson says “let’s make this decree and then we will receive the offerings” and he says

“As we receive today’s offering, we are believing the Lord for: Jobs and Better Jobs, Raises and bonuses, benefits, sales and commissions, favorable settlements, estates and inheritances, interests and income, rebates and returns, checks in the mail, gifts and surprises, finding money, debts paid off, expenses decreased, blessing and increase, thank you Lord, for meeting all of my financial needs that I may have more than enough to give into the kingdom of God, and promote the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Notice that they didn’t pray to God, they declared it to be. These same people say that to pray thy will be done is a faithless prayer. Faithless according to him but not scripture.

The law of attraction is sorcery. Sorcery biblically speaking is the use of spells, divination, speaking to spirits, Fortune telling and reading omens. It is an attempt to bypass God’s wisdom and power and give glory to Satan instead. When we try to give glory to self that is effectively giving glory to Satan. When we make ourselves the power source we are disregarding God as the ultimate supreme power and sovereignty.

People base the idea that this is biblical on passages like Matthew 21:22 and Matthew 7:7-8: ask, believe and receive are their three steps to getting everything you want. They say what you ask the universe or source or God for; believing without ever doubting that you will get it; then YOU MUST GET IT.

Matthew 21:22 says

“And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”” Matthew‬ ‭21:22‬

This sounds right but we know that that can’t be a blanket statement. Though we have people like Kenneth Copeland and Creflo Dollar who say I am believing that God is going to give me a new Jet (their statement not mine) that isn’t what scripture tells us there are stipulations to prayer.

In order to maintain this idea you have to throw out much of what we know about God. we know that if we ask for 1000 cakes God is not obligated to give it to us. We know that God will not fail to give his children good things so for one it has to be good in God’s eyes. He will not give us a snake when we ask for bread. We are to pray according to God’s will in the name of Jesus. Asking like a child asking their Father. When we ask we look to him to know the right response and give us what we need even when it looks like the opposite. We know that we are to rely on him for breath and life. For food and clothing and every good thing.

Luke 1:13 says ``If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

There we are told that the good gift in this is the Holy spirit. What better gift can you get? In a lot of these passages Jesus is directly talking about salvation. We have to remember that God wants us to be heavenly minded and not worldly minded. Not that we can’t ask for healing or help in whatever situation we need (yes even for help with money) but our focus should not be selfish and it should primarily be on him. Our prayer life with God should be based on our walk with him. Our relationship. It strengthens our faith in our heavenly Father. We are to be wholly dependent on him.

We are told to seek God and he will give us everything we need. Not to be selfish. Part of our relationship with God is that we trust that he knows what’s best and he can accomplish whatever that is. We ask for healing and know that if it is what is best he will do it. We are to love God above all else. When we do that and we desire him and seek him with our whole hearts he does really give us everything we ask for. At that point you aren’t going to be asking him for some lavish thing selfishly or if you do you will be doing it humbly knowing that he has the right to say no.

I truly believe that we shouldnt doubt God’s ability. That is part of our relationship knowing our position and his.

I hope you can see why I say that this is unbiblical. I pray that even if you don’t agree that you start looking into it yourself with an eye to see the truth one way or the other. Don’t just take my word for it but open your bible and pray and seek God yourself. When you ask for wisdom he will most assuredly give it to you.

I love you my friends. Have a blessed day.
